Understanding language problems

Conor and Eoin can’t speak so they need speech therapy, right? Well , not exactly. As time went on I discovered that language and speech in turn can be disrupted by a myriad of conditions. These conditions can exist alone, or in our case together. Over time we started to become aware of “differential’ diagnosis, meaning that we needed to understand and treat each issue preventing speech and language like joining links in a chain.

Ultimately we discovered the boys we suffering from deficits which affected all of the primary language centers in the brain leading to a dismal future prognosis. This section sets out a number of the diagnosis’ that we encountered in our search for a solution to the boys communication deficits. Having worked in medical research for some twenty years, wading through this information and its import was difficult but really informed our research down the road.

I hope this will be of help to you,

Enda.
